Stride Ahead Syllable Division Answers

A particular challenge for anyone with reading difficulties is how to ‘decode’ longer words.

The ability to quickly and accurately divide long words mentally and then pronounce them accurately is an important skill to master.

Stride Ahead aims to help students who can read, but who have difficulty in understanding what they read. This is often the case for those who have initial reading problems. Their minds are too concentrated on the mechanics of decoding text that they are unable to give adequate attention to meaning.

In the late 1970’s I created a unique syllable division system which was incorporated into the reading manual Toe By Toe. Over many years this system has successfully taught thousands of people - dyslexics and non-dyslexics - to read. This success is due to the application of this easy-to-use syllable division and the structured over-teaching of the phonemes in question.

Stride Ahead also uses Syllable Division Exercises. The aim of Stride Ahead is to make these phonemes so familiar to dyslexic students that they are able to recognise them immediately, without concentrated mental effort. This ‘frees them up’ so they can get on with the important process of understanding text. Timing is the key to this process and careful timing forms the essence of the Stride Ahead  method.
